Spurred on by the Orlando nightclub massacre, LGBT groups have announced a campaign pushing what they call common sense gun safety measures.

Gay rights leaders say they’ve been successful recently, in not only changing laws, but changing American attitudes on issues like gay marriage and believe they can do the same when it comes to gun control.

Rick Zbur is the Executive Director of Equality California.

“Just like with the american public in general, there’s overwhelming support for tougher gun safety laws,” he says. “I would suspect that in the LGBT community, given the levels of violence that LGBT people face, the support is even higher than the general public.”

Zbur says the “safe and equal” campaign will target a number of measures being debated nationally and here in California.

Several of those bills have been making their way through the legislature, including ones that would require background checks on Californians buying ammunition and ban large capacity magazines. And, require gun owners to report lost or stolen guns within five days.
