Transform California Communications Director

Organizational Background:
Transform California is a campaign led by a diverse coalition of Californians who are committed to making the Golden State a place where all transgender and gender non conforming people can feel safe and live free from discrimination. The campaign was co-founded by Transgender Law Center and Equality California. The effort launched in Los Angeles in May of 2016, and has continued to hold press availabilities, community events, and other actions throughout California.

Position Overview:
The Communications Director will report to senior leadership from Transgender Law Center and Equality California as well as the campaign’s Executive Committee and be responsible for leading the coalition’s communications efforts, including message research and implementation, media relations, and digital communication.

Responsibilities:
Message Strategy and Implementation
The Communications Director will work with everyone involved in Transform California’s public education and community engagement efforts to offer strategic message guidance, review communications, and ensure message accuracy and discipline.

Responsibilities will include proofing, editing, and approving written and print materials in adherence with existing and on-going research on this issue.

Message Research Coordination
The Communications Director will work closely and coordinate with the research team that has been contracted by Transform California.

Responsibilities will include, but may not be limited to:

• Producing materials for research purposes
• Coordinating filming or production of video materials for research purposes
• Synthesizing research findings for use by the Transform California team, coalition and broader movement

Media Relations
The Communications Director will lead Transform California’s efforts to engage the news media in our on-going public education and community engagement work. For example, pitching for news coverage of community event, statements, or press conferences. The Communications Director will work closely with the Community Engagement staff to identify upcoming opportunities for media coverage of Transform’s work, and to create potential opportunities for coverage, too.

Digital Presence Management
The Communications Director will be responsible for leading efforts to maintain the digital presence of Transform California, including:
• Website updates & maintenance
• Social media platforms
o Facebook
o Twitter
o Others as needed or identified by Transform California team

Qualifications:
1. Proven commitment to addressing issues impacting transgender and gender nonconforming people, the broader LGB community, and advancing equality and social justice for all people.
2. Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Political Science or equivalent related experience.
3. Three to five (or more) years of experience with communications efforts, preferably in the non-profit, advocacy, political, or government fields.
4. Ability to effectively multi-task and manage multiple projects with strong organization skills and attention to detail.
5. Significant experience with social and digital media.
6. Working knowledge of Blue State Digital or like CRM platforms a plus.

Salary will be based on experience and includes competitive benefits (healthcare, dental, vision, long/short term disability, life insurance, and 401K). This full-time, temporary position will be based out of the Los Angeles headquarters of EQCA and may require evening and weekend work time on occasion. The position will be run through the end of November 2016.
