Organizational Background:

Equality California (EQCA) is California’s largest statewide lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) civil rights organization with over 800,000 members. EQCA’s mission is to achieve full and lasting equality, acceptance, and social justice for members of the LGBT community, and the communities that LGBT people are a part of. Through its legislative work, EQCA has successfully sponsored 118 pieces of pro-equality legislation cementing California as the state with strongest LGBT-civil rights protections in the country. EQCA strives to create a broad and diverse alliance of LGBT people, educators, government officials, communities of color and faith, labor, business, and social justice communities to achieve our goals.

Equality California Institute (EQCAI), EQCA’s sibling organization, is a 501(c)3 organization that utilizes advocacy, education, and mobilization programs to promote full and lasting equality and acceptance of LGBT people, improve the health and well-being of the LGBT community, and educate the broader community on important LGBT issues such as transgender equality, violence and hate crimes, healthcare, health disparities, the needs of LGBT seniors and youth, homelessness and immigration. Over the last five years, EQCAI has spearheaded successful programs to tackle these issues, including multiple public education campaigns, such as Transform California, Equality4All, #Take It, I’m PrEPed, Let California Ring, Fair Share for Equality, the Breakthrough Conversations Project, and Health Happens with Equality.

Position Overview:

Equality California is seeking two experienced and motivated full-time Field Organizers to execute our 2017 health advocacy and LGBT pride programming in and around Sacramento and the Central Valley, and in Orange County. The Field Organizers will help lead EQCA’s community organizing efforts on the ground in the region(s) assigned, build relationships with LGBT and allied organizations, recruit volunteers and lead, support and coordinate a variety of events including LGBT Prides and health centered Town Halls. These positions are temporary and will run through July 31, 2017.

Responsibilities:

This is a remotely supervised organizing position. In this role, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Break big goals into smaller ones, learn to build a program to accomplish them, develop timelines and benchmarks, and produce reports to inform the EQCA team of your progress.
  • Spearhead and organize education programs and pride parade contingents at LGBT pride parades and festivals in the region.
  • Help organize and support various actions including- town halls, rallies, petition drives and marches, in each region.
  • Engage in significant volunteer recruiting and community mobilization to ensure sizable community participation in pride parades, rallies, marches, town halls, and to staff pride education booths.
  • Participate in and lead program tactics such as one-on-one meetings and coalition building.
  • Develop key relationships with LGBT, LGBT allied, progressive, political, labor, immigration, business, student organizations, healthcare advocates, and religious congregations to build a base of support within communities.
  • Participate in message and strategy briefings and report daily and weekly progress to goals.
  • Manage time-sheets and other administrative materials per deadlines assigned.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as necessary.

Qualifications:

Applicants for this position should bring the following knowledge, abilities, and attitude:

  • Knowledge, passion and commitment to addressing issues impacting the LGBT community as well as advancing equality and social justice for all communities.
  • Commitment to working across race, class, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, and age to achieve objectives.
  • Effective communication skills- in person, presentation, and writing.
  • At least two years of experience in electoral work cycles with strong background in community organizing and demonstrated ability to work with grassroots community organizations.
  • Experience with organizing events and volunteer recruitment.
  • Experience and/or interest in data driven goal setting and data management.
  • Strong understanding of legal parameters for organizing in a 501 (c) (3) and 501 (c) (4) contexts.
  • Strong organizational skills, accountable, adaptive and self-motivated to identify and manage multiple needs, priorities, and complete work without being micro managed.
  • Comfortable with technology and ability to learn new tools quickly.
  • Willing and able to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends.
  • Must have a reliable car and driver’s license.

Salary will be based on experience. These are remote full time positions and must be based in the North Central Valley and Orange County. Both positions will require a flexible schedule including evening and weekend work time, as well as regular travel within the region.  Applicants will be reimbursed for mileage, but must have a car and be able to drive within the region.
