Organizational Background:

Equality California (EQCA) is the nation’s largest statewide lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) civil rights organization with over 800,000 members. EQCA’s mission is to achieve full and lasting equality, acceptance, and social justice for members of the LGBT community, and the communities that LGBT people are a part of. Through its legislative work, EQCA has successfully sponsored 118 pieces of pro-equality legislation cementing California as the state with strongest LGBT-civil rights protections in the country. EQCA strives to create a broad and diverse alliance of LGBT people, educators, government officials, communities of color and faith, labor, business, and social justice communities to achieve our goals.

Equality California Institute (EQCAI), EQCA’s sibling organization, is a 501(c)3 organization that utilizes advocacy, education, and mobilization programs to promote full and lasting equality and acceptance of LGBT people, improve the health and well-being of the LGBT community, and educate the broader community on important LGBT issues such as transgender equality, violence and hate crimes, healthcare, health disparities, the needs of LGBT seniors and youth, homelessness and immigration. Over the last five years, EQCAI has spearheaded successful programs to tackle these issues, including multiple public education campaigns, such as Transform California, Equality4All, #Take It, I’m PrEPed, Let California Ring, Fair Share for Equality, the Breakthrough Conversations Project, and Health Happens with Equality.

Position Overview:

Equality California and Equality California Institute seek a full-time Development Associate. Working closely with the Development team, the Development Associate is responsible for supporting the implementation of all fundraising activities. This position is ideal for candidates with 2 years experience in development. This position would be based in our Los Angeles office and will be supervised by the Development Director.

Responsibilities:

Individual Donors

  • Provide high level support to staff on fundraising issues
  • Researching prospective donors, updating research on existing donors.
  • Staffing call time for the Development Director & Executive Director
  • Preparing call time, including prepping call sheets, updating BSD & Salesforce and call binder frequently.
  • Scheduling fundraising meetings and travel for Development Director and Executive Director
  • Creating and maintaining donor files and records in BSD & Salesforce.
  • Working with compliance department to manage tracking of contribution information and keeping the staff up to date on money received.
  • Maintaining and updating pledge and expected contribution spreadsheet.
  • Drafting donor correspondence, including quarterly mailings, monthly emails, and call time and meeting follow up.
  • Preparing small and large donor mailings, including proposal for all donors, and coordinating acknowledgments notes for contributions.
  • Point of contact for Development Director and Executive Director when in contact with donors.
  • Point of contact for various vendors.

Meeting/event preparation

  • Prepare development reports for Board meetings, including preparation and distribution of materials.
  • Plan Donor Briefing events, conference calls and manage invite and RSVP lists.
  • Coordinating fundraising and reception for annual State Summit.
  • Support planning and fundraising for major events.

Qualifications:

  1. 1-2 years development experience (some call time and donor correspondence experience preferred).
  2. Experience supporting and implementing major events a plus
  3. Experience working with non-profits or political organizations a plus.
  4. Extreme attention to detail.
  5. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  6. Proficiency in MS Office Programs including Word and PowerPoint. A strong proficiency in Excel is preferred.
  7. Experience working with Blue State Digital and/or Salesforce a plus
  8. Ability to prioritize and handle variety of projects simultaneously.
  9. Passion and commitment to addressing issues impacting the LGBT community as well as advancing equality and social justice generally.
  10. Commitment to working across lines of difference including race, class, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, and age.
  11. Ability to work effectively both individually and in a team in a fast-paced environment.
  12. Sense of humor and self-starter with an entrepreneurial spirit are a plus.

Salary will be based on experience and includes competitive benefits (healthcare, dental, vision, long/short term disability, life insurance and 401K). This full time position will be based out of our Los Angeles office and will require a flexible schedule including evening and weekend work time, as well as regular travel within the region.  Applicants will be reimbursed for mileage, but must have a car and be able to drive within the region.
