Organizational Background:
Equality California (EQCA) is California’s largest statewide lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) civil rights organization with over 800,000 members. EQCA’s mission is to achieve full and lasting equality, acceptance, and social justice for members of the LGBT community. Through its legislative work, EQCA has successfully sponsored 102 pieces of pro-equality legislation cementing California as the state with broadest LGBT-civil rights protections in the country. EQCA strives to create a broad and diverse alliance of LGBT people, educators, government officials, communities of color and faith, labor, business, and social justice communities to achieve our goals.
Equality California Institute (EQCAI), EQCA’s sister organization, is a 501(c)3 organization that utilizes advocacy, education, and mobilization programs to promote full and lasting equality and acceptance of LGBT people, improve the health and well-being of the LGBT community, and to educate the broader community on important LGBT related issues such as marriage equality, healthcare, health disparities, and immigration. Over the last five years, EQCAI has spearheaded successful programs to tackle these issues, including multiple public education campaigns, such as Let California Ring, Fair Share for Equality, the Breakthrough Conversations Project, and Health Happens with Equality.

Position Overview:
Equality California and Equality California Institute seek a Pride Organizer to help lead outreach, education, and engagement efforts at Pride Festivals and Pride Parades across the state. This is a full-time, salaried position for the months of May, June, and July. The Pride Organizer will work with EQCAI staff and volunteers to implement program priorities and issue campaigns at EQCAI’s booths at various Pride Festivals, and help recruit and organize large delegations at selected Pride Parades. These include, but are not limited to Long Beach, Los Angeles/West Hollywood, San Francisco, Fresno, San Diego, and Sacramento. This position would be based in our Los Angeles office.
Responsibilities:
Volunteer Recruitment and Training – From among Equality California members and support, recruit and train teams of volunteers to help organize and conduct education/outreach at various LGBT Pride Festivals and Parades across the state.
Pride Event Organizing – Organize logistics and materials, volunteers, and relationships with Pride Festival staffs across the state. Lead setup, management, and tear down of festival booth, collateral, and equipment for various prides. Engage with EQCAI’s local organizational partners in different regions to coordinate collaborative Pride activities.
Education and Outreach – Supervise and lead festival booth outreach and education strategies, including development of materials, supervising volunteers, meeting outreach goals, and integrating education/outreach into parade strategy.
Reporting and Data Management – Track, enter, and manage data from Pride events including: new member sign-ups, signature campaigns, and where appropriate, financial contributions.
Qualifications:
- Passion and commitment to addressing issues impacting the LGBT community as well as advancing equality and social justice generally.
- Ability to form strong working relationships.
- Strong public presentation skills, and some experience in pubic engagement, speaking and/or training.
- Ability to develop written materials for distribution at Pride Festivals and Parades.
- Experience in one or more of these areas: canvassing, organizing, community engagement, outreach and education.
- Ability to work extended shifts during Pride Festivals, including rigorous engagement of attendees and volunteers throughout the day. This will include nights and weekends during peak times.
- Maturity and leadership skills necessary to represent Equality California at public events and be responsible for volunteers’ professionalism and productivity.
Please note that this is a 3-month, full-time salaried position, which runs May-July at $3330 gross pay/month
Applicants must be at least 21 years of age. This seasonal position will be based out of our Los Angeles office and will require a flexible schedule including evening and weekend work time, as well as regular travel throughout the state. Applicants will be reimbursed for mileage, but must have a car and be able to travel.
