Organizational Background:

Equality California (EQCA) is the nation’s largest statewide lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBTQ) civil rights organization with over 800,000 members. Equality California brings the voices of LGBTQ people and allies to institutions of power in California and across the United States, striving to create a world that is healthy, just, and fully equal for all LGBTQ people. We advance civil rights and social justice by inspiring, advocating, and mobilizing through an inclusive movement that works tirelessly on behalf of those we serve. Through its legislative work, EQCA has successfully sponsored 127 pieces of pro-equality legislation cementing California as the state with strongest LGBTQ-civil rights protections in the country.

Equality California Institute (EQCAI) is a 501(c)3 organization that has a parallel mission statement to EQCAI, its 501(c)4 counterpart. EQCAI educates the broader community on important LGBTQ issues such as transgender equality, violence and hate crimes, healthcare, health disparities, the needs of LGBTQ seniors and youth, homelessness and immigration. Over the last five years, EQCAI has spearheaded successful programs to tackle these issues, including multiple public education campaigns, such as Transform California, Equality4All, #Take It, I’m PrEPed, Let California Ring, Fair Share for Equality, the Breakthrough Conversations Project, and Health Happens with Equality.

Position Overview:

The Communications Manager will support the overall communications strategy and program for Equality California, Equality California Institute, and the Equality California Political Action Committee. Reporting to the Communications Director, the Communications Manager will work collaboratively to support all aspects of the organization’s communications strategies.

Responsibilities:

  1. Serves as a member of Equality California’s communications team and collaborate with the Communications Director and senior leadership to develop communications strategies to broaden and deepen EQCA’s programmatic reach and impact.
  2. Helps execute strategic communications campaigns to raise the visibility and profile of Equality California and to increase organizational effectiveness.
  3. Supports the management of media and public relations strategies, including preparing press releases and other materials as well as responding to media requests (print, television, radio, online).
  4. Represents the organization in public venues and serve as a media representative and organization spokesperson as required.
  5. Supports all communications content creation for the organization.
  6. Ensures that the content of all media, publicity, and promotional materials adhere to the highest standards of quality and professionalism.
  7. Helps ensure consistency in EQCA’s publicity, marketing, branding, fundraising and training materials.
  8. Supports communication programs to support Equality California’s development and fundraising activities, including the development of web and social media support, and fund-raising event collateral.
  9. Drives the digital storytelling narrative of EQCA/I’s broad programs by identifying compelling messengers and drafting stories for the website, blog and social media highlighting the need for full LGBTQ equality.
  10. Creates email strategies for EQCAI/I, including drafting copy, coding and tracking metrics for communications with campaign email lists.
  11. Develops social media strategies aimed at quickly growing and motivating core audiences and persuading new supporters to join our effort.
  12. Manages multiple campaigns’ CRM (customer/constituent relationship management) system, including oversight of membership lists, online actions, online fundraising pages and other functions as needed.
  13. Manages the creation and day-to-day maintenance of campaign websites, overseeing the graphic design and programming consultants.
  14. Designs and implements online fundraising strategies.
  15. Designs and implements rapid list growth strategies, with a focus on online advertising.

Qualifications:

Applicants for this position should bring the following knowledge, abilities, and attitude:

  1. Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  2. At least 2-4 years experience in broad-based communications, media relations and/or digital campaigns.
  3. Experience working in a multicultural environment and with diverse communities.
  4. Demonstrated commitment to LGBTQ civil rights, diversity, social justice, and social change.
  5. Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work well with people inside and outside the organization.
  6. Strong administrative skills, including the ability to manage many projects simultaneously and to set priorities.
  1. Ability and interest to work with a wide range of organizations and institutions including other LGBTQ groups, schools, unions, religious congregations, and other social justice and advocacy organizations.
  2. Experience with multiple CRM and website platforms, including BSD Tools and WordPress.
  3. Prior experience managing online advertising campaigns to grow email lists and generate donations.
  4. Ability to work independently, prioritize work and remain flexible on multiple, high-paced campaigns.
  5. Attention to measurable results.
  6. Strong work ethic and willingness to work occasional nights and weekends as needed.
  7. Willingness to travel occasionally as needed.
  8. Fluency in Spanish preferred, but not required.
  9. Bachelor’s or graduate degree in communications or related areas strongly preferred.
