Organizational Background:

Equality California (EQCA) is the nation’s largest statewide lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) civil rights organization with over 800,000 members. Equality California brings the voices of LGBTQ people and allies to institutions of power in California and across the United States, striving to create a world that is healthy, just, and fully equal for all LGBTQ people. We advance civil rights and social justice by inspiring, advocating, and mobilizing through an inclusive movement that works tirelessly on behalf of those we serve. Through its legislative work, EQCA has successfully sponsored 140 pieces of pro-equality legislation cementing California as the state with strongest LGBTQ-civil rights protections in the country.

Equality California Institute (EQCAI) is a 501(c)3 organization that has a parallel mission to EQCA, its 501(c)4 counterpart. EQCAI educates the broader community on important LGBTQ issues such as transgender equality, violence and hate crimes, healthcare, health disparities, the needs of LGBTQ seniors and youth, homelessness and immigration. Over the last five years, EQCAI has spearheaded successful programs to tackle these issues, including multiple public education campaigns, such as Transform California, Equality4All, #Take It, I’m PrEPed, Let California Ring, Fair Share for Equality, the Breakthrough Conversations Project, and Health Happens with Equality.

Position Overview:

EQCA and EQCAI seek a Major Gifts Officer (MGO) to develop and oversee a comprehensive major donor program through identification, relationship development, acknowledgement, and stewardship of high-level supporters. With support from the Executive and Managing Directors, Director of Development, 5-person Development team, and board members, the MGO will plan and execute successful programs and events in which to engage individuals with the capacity and passion to advance the EQCA/EQCAI mission. The MGO identifies strategic opportunities to retain and grow relationships with current constituents while identifying and engaging new donors. This is a full-time, salaried position with the ideal candidate being based in the San Francisco Bay area with the ability to travel frequently to Los Angeles and throughout the state. Los Angeles and other California-based candidates will be considered, however an understanding of the San Francisco philanthropic community and frequent travel is required.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Design EQCA major donor development plan for individual gifts of $5,000 and above, including implementation of prospect management and moves management systems, in coordination with Director of Development and Individual Giving Manager.
  • Provide support to Board members for achieving their annual give/get.
  • Lead staff and Board members in successful execution of Major Donor development plan.
  • Identify new major donor prospects; create and execute customized cultivation and ask strategies for each.
  • Conduct in-person meetings to solicit and secure both new and renewal donors.
  • Work with Board members and major donors to schedule and oversee underwritten high-level cultivation dinners and events throughout the state.
  • Manage donor acknowledgment, stewardship, and fulfillment programs to maximize donor engagement and continued support.
  • Foster a positive, professional public image for EQCA:
    • Ensure that all donors receive regular communications and updates from EQCA in accordance with their preferences,
    • Represent EQCA at community and/or professional activities and events,
    • Maintain professional relationships with local, statewide and national LGBTQ and allied agencies and collaborators.
  • Work with Director of Development to develop and execute a planned giving program.
  • Meet or exceed annual Major Gifts revenue goals.
  • Maintain current, accurate records of all donor information and correspondence.
  • Provide regular reports to the management staff and Board as requested.
  • Participate in creation of EQCA annual budget.
  • Track monthly expenditures to ensure compliance with approved budgets.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 3-5 years of major gifts or other relationship-based fundraising or sales experience required
  • Demonstrated success at cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding high net-worth donors is required
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with ability to build relationships with a wide range of high net-worth individuals
  • Experiencing working on planned or estate gifts preferred
  • Proficiency in MS Office Programs including Excel and Word is required
  • Proficiency with Salesforce CRM database highly desirable
  • Experience with Blue State Digital/ActBlue is a plus
  • Frequent travel and weekend and evening work required.
  • Ability to handle multiple priorities and function well in a team environment while working remotely
  • Bachelor’s degree from accredited university preferred
