Organizational Background:

Equality California (EQCA) is California’s largest statewide lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) civil rights organization with over 800,000 members. EQCA brings the voices of LGBTQ people and allies to institutions of power in California and across the United States, striving to create a world that is healthy, just, and fully equal for all LGBTQ people. We advance civil rights and social justice by inspiring, advocating, and mobilizing through an inclusive movement that works tirelessly on behalf of those we serve. For 20 years, Equality California has led the fight for LGBTQ civil rights and social justice in California — and we’ve passed the strongest statewide civil rights protections in the country with 142 pieces of pro-equality legislation passed in the California legislature. EQCA strives to create a broad and diverse alliance of LGBTQ people, educators, government officials, communities of color and faith, labor, business, and social justice communities to achieve our goals.

Equality California Institute (EQCAI), EQCA’s sibling organization, is a 501(c)3 organization that utilizes advocacy, education, and mobilization programs to promote full and lasting equality and acceptance of LGBTQ people, improve the health and well-being of the LGBTQ community, and educate the broader community on important LGBTQ issues such as transgender equality, violence and hate crimes, healthcare, health disparities, the needs of LGBTQ seniors and youth, homelessness and immigration. Over the last five years, EQCAI has spearheaded successful programs to tackle these issues, including multiple public education campaigns, such as  Health Happens with Equality, #Take It, I’m PrEP’d, Fair Share for Equality, Out Against Big Tobacco, Equality4All and the Safe and Supportive Schools Program.
