Equality California (EQCA) is the nation’s largest statewide lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) civil rights organization with over 800,000 members. Equality California Institute (EQCAI) is a 501(c)3 organization that has a parallel mission to EQCA, its 501(c)4 counterpart. EQCAI educates the broader community on important LGBTQ issues such as transgender equality, violence and hate crimes, healthcare, health disparities, the needs of LGBTQ seniors and youth, homelessness and immigration. Over the last five years, EQCAI has spearheaded successful programs to tackle these issues, including multiple public education programs and events, such as Fair Share for Equality, LGBTQ Advocacy Day, LGBTQ Leadership Academy, Out Against Big Tobacco, Equality4All, #Take It – I’m PrEP’d, #Out4Mental Health, #WillBeCounted and Health Happens with Equality.
In 2019, Equality California launched Silver State Equality, a program to advance the mission of full, lived equality for all LGBTQ people in Nevada.
Position Overview:
Equality California seeks an Associate Director of Donor Relations to develop and oversee a comprehensive, relationship-based individual giving program by managing the research, identification, cultivation, solicitation, acknowledgement, and stewardship of sustaining and major donors. With support from the Executive and Managing Directors and Director of Development, the Associate Director of Donor Relations will manage a Donor Relations Manager and Associate and work alongside a two-person special events team to plan and execute successful communication campaigns and events in which to engage individuals with the capacity and passion to advance the Equality California mission.
The Donor Relations team will capitalize on strategic opportunities to retain and grow relationships with current constituents, convert event attendees into ongoing supports and identify and engage new donors in the Capitol Club, our sustaining donor program for gifts of $600-$4,999 annually, and Leadership Circle, our major donor program for gifts of $5,000+ annually. The Associate Director of Donor Relations’ responsibilities also include direct major gift solicitation and supporting host committee management for the six-event Equality Awards series. Experience with planned giving, grant management and/or capital/endowment campaigns is preferred. This is a full-time, salaried position with the ideal candidate being based in Equality California’s Los Angeles headquarters with the ability to travel frequently to major markets throughout California and Nevada. San Francisco and other California-based candidates will be considered. Qualified candidates outside of California are also encouraged to apply with the potential for relocation support.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Oversee individual giving programs Capitol Club and Leadership Circle to ensure budgeted revenue goals are achieved or exceeded.
- Lead identification and research for new major and sustaining donor prospects.
- Create and execute customized cultivation and ask strategies for each prospect category.
- Conduct in-person meetings to solicit and secure both new and renewal donors, with participation of Executive Director, Managing Director and Director of Development as appropriate.
- Work with Board and Development Committee members to schedule, plan and execute cultivation and stewardship events throughout the state.
- Manage donor acknowledgment, stewardship and benefit fulfillment to maximize donor engagement and continued support.
- Oversee maintenance of current, accurate records of all donor information and correspondence.
- Provide regular progress reports to the management staff and Board.
- Participate on internal team to migrate donor records from Blue State Digital to EveryAction donor database, including implementation of prospect management and moves management systems.
- Provide support to Board members for achieving their annual give/get.
- Work with Director of Development to develop and execute a planned giving program.
- Participate in creation of annual expense and revenue budgets.
- Track monthly expenditures to ensure compliance with approved budgets.
- Manage Donor Relations Manager and Donor Relations Associate.
- Foster a positive, professional public image for Equality California:
- Ensure that all donors receive regular communications and updates in accordance with their preferences,
- Represent EQCA at community and/or professional activities and events, and
- Maintain professional relationships with local, statewide and national LGBTQ and allied agencies and collaborators.
Qualifications:
- Minimum of 5 years of progressive individual giving management or other relationship-based nonprofit or political fundraising experience required
- Demonstrated success at cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding high net-worth donors is required
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Excellent interpersonal skills with ability to build relationships with a wide range of constituents
- Experience working on planned or estate gifts preferred
- Experience working on a capital or endowment campaign preferred
- Experience with grants management preferred
- Proficiency in MS Office Programs including Excel and Word is required
- Proficiency with EveryAction or a similar web-based donor database highly desirable
- Experience with Blue State Digital and/or ActBlue is a plus
- Frequent travel and weekend and evening work required
- Ability to handle multiple priorities and function well in a team environment
- Bachelor’s degree from accredited university preferred
