Equality California Institute (EQCAI) is a 501(c)3 organization that has a parallel mission to EQCA, its 501(c)4 counterpart. EQCAI educates the broader community on important LGBTQ issues such as transgender equality, violence and hate crimes, healthcare, health disparities, the needs of LGBTQ seniors and youth, homelessness and immigration. Over the last five years, EQCAI has spearheaded successful programs to tackle these issues, including multiple public education campaigns, such as Transform California, Equality4All, #Take It, I’m PrEP’d, Let California Ring, Fair Share for Equality, the Breakthrough Conversations Project, and Health Happens with Equality.
In 2019, Equality California launched Silver State Equality, a program to advance the mission of full, lived equality for all LGBTQ people in Nevada.
Position Overview:
EQCAI seeks a part-time Canvass Captain to help lead the implementation of EQCAI’s Canvass and Text-to-Relay 2020 Census Campaign outreach.
The Canvass Captain will support EQCAI’s 10-week canvass campaign in one of the following communities, Long Beach, West Hollywood or San Fernando Valley, to educate EQCAI members about the 2020 Census and encourage the completion of the questionnaire during the self-response period.
Additionally, the Canvass Captain will support the Census Program Team in volunteer recruitment, training, and retention to ensure an accurate and complete count in the 2020 Census.
This position would be based in our Los Angeles office and will be supervised by the Census Program Manager.
Duties and Responsibilities
Working under the leadership of EQCAI Census Program Manager, the Canvass Captain will:
- Ensure that canvass and text-to-relay metrics are being met;
- Establish and maintain relationships with EQCAI stakeholders as it relates to the #WillBeCounted 2020 Census Campaign;
- Supervise a team of volunteers on behalf of EQCAI’s census engagement plan;
- Engage EQCAI members about the 2020 Census through canvassing, phone-banking, and text-banking;
- Track census engagement activities using both qualitative and quantitative methods;
- Adhere to all data security and privacy protocols around census engagement.
Qualifications:
- Ability to work nights and weekends;
- Commitment to working across lines of difference, including race, class, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, and age to achieve objectives;
- Knowledge, passion, and commitment to addressing issues impacting the LGBTQ community as well as advancing equality and social justice generally;
- Ability and interest to work with a wide range of organizations and institutions including other LGBTQ groups, schools, unions, religious congregations, and other social justice and advocacy organizations;
- Experience managing volunteers;
- Experience in community engagement, campaign work, or other forms of direct outreach;
- Excellent communication, project management, and multi-tasking skills;
- Excellent interpersonal and relationship management skills;
- Spanish language proficiency preferred, but not required;
- Proficiency in use of technology such as laptop computers and tablets;
- Above all else, a positive attitude and willingness to work collaboratively and in support of the EQCAI mission.
