Position: LGBTQ+ Cultural Competency Training Program Associate

Equality California Institute works to achieve full, lived LGBTQ+ equality by reducing disparities in LGBTQ+ health and well-being, developing a pipeline of LGBTQ+ leaders and increasing civic participation within the LGBTQ+ community.
Silver State Equality is Nevada’s statewide LGBTQ+ civil rights organization, affiliated with and supported by Equality California.
Equality California’s affiliated political action committees work to elect pro-equality candidates running for federal, state and local elected office who have a proven track record of supporting civil rights and social justice for LGBTQ+ people and who are committed to advancing these goals in their capacity as elected officials.
Position Overview:
Equality California Institute’s LGBTQ+ Cultural Competency Training program gives healthcare providers the tools and training they need to understand the unique needs of LGBTQ+ patients and increase delivery of culturally competent care. Through the LGBTQ+ Cultural Competency Training program, EQCAI has trained over 2,500 health-care providers at more than 100 clinics and healthcare organizations across California, Nevada and Arizona, established health action teams with partner LGBTQ+, healthcare and immigration organizations from across the state focused on meeting the unique healthcare needs of each community, and convened community town halls in cities across the state focused on LGBTQ+ healthcare and navigating the changing landscape of access to care under the Trump-Pence Administration. Equality California and Equality California Institute seek a full-time Program Associate to help support implementation of the LGBTQ+ Cultural Competency Training program, contribute to the expansion of a digital and on-demand LGBTQ+ Cultural Competency Trainings for healthcare and homeless service providers, and assist with grant management.
This position will be based in Los Angeles and will be supervised by the Program Manager.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all Equality California/Equality California Institute staff are working remotely. If and when it is safe to do so (in compliance with state and local guidance), the Program Associate will be expected to work at the Equality California main office located in Los Angeles.
Responsibilities:
1. Serve as an EQCA/I’s Program Associate by primarily supporting EQCA/I’s LGBTQ+ Cultural Competency Training program. This work includes:
- Updating the LGBTQ+ Cultural Competency Training curriculum for presentations to healthcare and homeless service providers.
- Developing supplemental training materials.
- Facilitating LGBTQ+ cultural competency trainings across the state.
- Contributing to the expansion of a digital and on-demand LGBTQ+ Cultural Competency Trainings for healthcare and homeless service providers.
- Assisting with grant writing and assisting with the final grant report.
2. Support EQCAI’s Pride Parade and Festival outreach and education programming statewide:
- Availability to work nights and weekends, and when it is safe to do so, a willingness to travel across the state.
3. Support EQCA/I’s advocacy, legislative, and electoral work, which may include:
- Phone/text bank in support of EQCA endorsed candidates.
- Canvassing and talking to voters.
- Volunteer recruitment to execute canvasses.
- Volunteer recruitment.
5. Assist with other current EQCA/I programs and issues as needed, including expanding healthcare access, immigration, HIV/AIDS advocacy and prevention, PrEP, transgender rights, safe and supportive schools, leadership development, passing pro-equality legislation and electing supportive candidates to office.
- Program associates may be assigned a different program completely, and/or short and long-term additional programs based on the needs of the organization.
Qualifications:
- Strong desire to contribute to the mission of Equality California/Institute.
- At least 1 – 3 years experience working in social justice areas including: civil rights, racial justice, progressive and/or social justice organizations.
- Experience working in the LGBTQ+ movement, public health, or education field preferred.
- Experience working on (or a desire to work on) LGBTQ+ health issues and a familiarity with LGBTQ+ health disparities preferred.
- Comfortable facilitating trainings for large groups. Experience public speaking and providing LGBTQ+ cultural competency trainings a plus.
- A Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience is required.
Skills and Abilities:
- Demonstrates ability to manage process, plan workflow, handle multiple tasks simultaneously, and meet office deadlines; good attention to detail and follow-through are essential.
- Ability to take initiative, work collaboratively, and think proactively and creatively.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, as well as strong analytic ability.
- Strong administrative and computer skills, proficient in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
Salary will be based on experience and includes competitive benefits (healthcare, dental, vision, long/short term disability, life insurance and 401K). This full-time position will require a flexible schedule including evening and weekend work time, as well as regular travel across California. Applicants will be reimbursed for mileage, but must have a reliable car and be able to drive in California.
