Organizational Background:

Equality California is the nation’s largest statewide lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer+ (LGBTQ+) civil rights organization with over 900,000 members. Equality California brings the voices of LGBTQ+ people and allies to institutions of power in California and across the United States, striving to create a world that is healthy, just, and fully equal for all LGBTQ+ people. We advance civil rights and social justice by inspiring, advocating, and mobilizing through an inclusive movement that works tirelessly on behalf of those we serve. For more than 20 years, Equality California has been fighting for full, lived LGBTQ+ equality in a number of ways: electing pro-equality leaders up and down the ballot; passing pro-equality legislation in California, Nevada and Washington, DC; and fighting for LGBTQ+ civil rights and social justice in the courtroom.

Equality California Institute is a 501(c)(3) organization that has a parallel mission to Equality California, its 501(c)(4) counterpart. Equality California Institute works to achieve full, lived LGBTQ+ equality by reducing disparities in LGBTQ+ health and well-being, developing a pipeline of LGBTQ+ leaders and increasing civic participation within the LGBTQ+ community.

Position Overview:

In 2020, Equality California launched a new leadership program (Nosotros VIHviendo) aimed at equipping Latinx men with tools and networks to implement projects that decrease the stigma surrounding HIV and build people power in communities. We have received a grant to support this program, and we will target Latinx men living throughout California and Nevada. Equality California Institute seeks a full-time Program Manager to lead the implementation and grant management of this leadership program, work with grassroots community leaders, build key relationships with Latinx leaders in LGBTQ+ and allied organizations, and manage all aspects of a detailed grant budget.

The Program Manager will assist with other current Equality California programs and issues, including community engagement events (LGBTQ+ Prides), immigration, pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP medication), transgender rights, safe and supportive schools, passing pro-equality legislation and electing supportive candidates to office. Equality California’s expanded mission includes an intersectional approach to issues, as well as working with a wide range of institutions such as schools, businesses, unions, religious congregations, local governments, health clinics, and LGBTQ+ centers.

Responsibilities:

1. Serve as an Equality California Program Manager by primarily leading Equality California’s Latinx leadership program and assisting with other programs as needed. This work includes:
   • Leading a cohort of Latinx grassroots leaders and supporting their efforts to decrease HIV stigma.
   • Implementing objectives from grant funded programs throughout California and Nevada.
   • Implementing and developing strategies to achieve all grant deliverables.
   • Developing key relationships with representatives of LGBTQ+ organizations, LGBTQ-friendly organizations, allied organizations, and organizations providing services to people living with HIV.
   • Managing all aspects of the grant including budget, reports, invoices, and tracking grant metrics and objectives. Developing strategies for meeting all grant objectives.
   • Build in-depth programming for an intensive advocacy training program that is linguistically and culturally competent for the Latinx grassroots leaders.
   • Manage grant reporting and program evaluation processes.
   • Providing program support across all Equality California’s program and issue priorities.

2. Manage and/or support Equality California’s Pride Parade and Festival outreach and education programming statewide:
   • Developing the Equality California Pride schedule.
   • Identifying LGBTQ+ pride events for participation.
   • Accurately communicate Equality California programs to festival attendees.
   • Execute specific actions and goals related to all Equality California ’s programs and legislative priorities.
   • Volunteer recruitment and management.
   • Developing day-of “run-of-shows” for all staff and volunteers.
   • Tracking education materials and meeting event benchmarks.
   • Availability to work nights and weekends, and willingness to travel across the state.

3. Support Equality California’s advocacy, legislative, and electoral work:
   • Phone/text bank in support of Equality California endorsed candidates.
   • Canvassing and talking to voters will be required.
   • Volunteer recruitment to execute canvasses.
   • Experience with PDI and VAN is helpful.

4. Support other work of the organization on an as-needed basis at the discretion of the Program Director, Managing Director and Executive Director:
   • All program managers are expected and required to work across all programs.
   • Program managers might be assigned and tasked with short and long-term additional programs.
   • Program managers might be assigned a different program completely based on the needs of the organization.

Qualifications:

Applicants for this position should bring the following knowledge, abilities, and attitude:

1. At least 3 – 6 years management experience working in any of the following fields: advocacy, outreach, public education, and mobilization; as well as, working in social justice areas including: civil rights, progressive and/or social justice organizations, preferably in the LGBTQ+ movement, public policy, public health, or HIV/AIDS. One year or more of people management experience is required.
2. Experience working within the confines of grant-funded projects, detail-oriented and thorough work style, preferably with experience managing government-funded grant programs.
3. Proven track record for budget management. Strong attention to detail, advanced excel experience, and understanding of basic accounting.
4. Experience working on (or a desire to work on) health issues, specifically, HIV/AIDS.
5. Knowledge, passion and commitment to addressing issues impacting the LGBTQ+ community as well as advancing equality and social justice generally.
6. Strong ties to the Latinx community.
7. Bilingual in Spanish is strongly preferred.
8. Strong public presentation skills, and experience in public speaking and/or training.
9. Strong written communication skills including ability to assist in writing grant proposals, draft member communications, social media outreach, and event publicity.
10. Commitment to working across lines of difference, including race, class, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, and age to achieve objectives.
11. Ability and interest to work with a wide range of organizations and institutions including other LGBTQ+ groups, schools, unions, religious congregations, and other social justice and advocacy organizations. Demonstrated experience with at least some of these types of organizations preferred.
12. Ability and experience in forming strong public relationships.
13. Experienced campaign/community organizer preferred.
14. Experience implementing leadership development programs preferred.
15. A Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience is required.
16. Above all else, a positive attitude and willingness to work collaboratively and in support of Equality California’s mission.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all Equality California and Equality California Institute staff are working remotely. In compliance with the state and local guidance, all Equality California and Equality California Institute staff located in the greater Los Angeles County area are expecting to return to the office in early 2022, pending changes in key COVID-19 restrictions. At that time, the Program Manager working on the Latinx leadership program will be required to work from the Equality California headquarters located in Los Angeles.

Salary will be based on experience and includes competitive benefits (healthcare, dental, vision, long/short term disability, life insurance and 401K). This full-time exempt position will be based out of the Los Angeles office and will require a flexible schedule including evening and weekend work time, as well as regular travel across California and sometimes, Nevada. This will also include participation in Equality California’s schedule of events, including Pride festivals, advocacy events, and more. Applicants will be reimbursed for mileage and must have a reliable car and be able to drive in California.
