Equality California is the nation’s largest statewide lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer+ (LGBTQ+) civil rights organization with over 900,000 members. For the purpose of this job description, “Equality California” is used as an umbrella term for Equality California and its sister organization, Equality California Institute.

Equality California Institute is a 501(c)(3) organization that has a parallel mission to Equality California, its 501(c)(4) counterpart. Equality California Institute works to achieve full, lived LGBTQ+ equality by reducing disparities in LGBTQ+ health and well-being, developing a pipeline of LGBTQ+ leaders and increasing civic participation within the LGBTQ+ community.

Position Overview:

Equality California seeks a Director of National Campaigns based in Los Angeles or San Francisco to lead national issue advocacy and public education campaigns, including the organization’s partnership with The Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation to support state-based organizations working to modernize HIV criminal laws. Reporting to the Managing Director of External Affairs, the Director of National Campaigns will work to build key relationships with LGBTQ+ and HIV organizations, support state coalitions and work collaboratively with senior leadership to develop and implement Equality California’s national issue advocacy campaign strategies.

This full-time, salaried exempt position will require a flexible schedule including evening and weekend work time, as well as regular travel across California and throughout the country. Applicants will be reimbursed for mileage and must have a reliable vehicle and be able to drive in California.

Responsibilities:

1. Strategy:
   • Work with Managing Director of External Affairs to develop and execute organization’s overall national campaign strategy, including (but not limited to) efforts to build public support for the modernization of HIV criminal laws.
   • Provide strategic communications and issue advocacy guidance to funders and partner organizations.
   • Support and manage outside consultants conducting messaging and policy research to support advocacy efforts.
2. Management:
   • Track legislation and issue advocacy efforts at the federal and state levels and provide regular updates to funders.
   • Manage all administrative responsibilities for campaigns, including drafting and executing MOU’s (memorandum of understanding), invoices, reporting and budget management.
   • Lead regular check-in meetings with funders, state coalitions, partner organizations and outside consultants to track progress toward program deliverables.
   • Support partners and subgrantees in the development and implementation of work plans.
   • Troubleshoot program implementation challenges that partners and subgrantees might experience with coalitions and funders.

Qualifications:

Applicants for this position should bring the following knowledge, abilities, and attitude:

• At least three years of experience in issue advocacy, mobilization and coalition management, preferably related to LGBTQ+ civil rights and/or HIV policy.
• Exceptional written communication skills, including ability to assist in writing policy memos/documents, grant reports, and formal meeting documents.
• Ability to excel in a fast-paced environment with competing high-stakes priorities.
• Detail-oriented and thorough work style.
• Knowledge, passion and commitment to addressing issues impacting the LGBTQ+ community as well as advancing equality and social justice generally.
• Strong public presentation skills, and experience in public speaking and/or training.
• Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work well with people inside and outside the organization.
• Strong administrative skills, including the ability to engage in many projects simultaneously, set priorities and manage expectations.
• Successful experience hiring and managing consultants.
• HIV/AIDS advocacy knowledge and expertise, and/or a background in public policy preferred.
• Experience working with grants preferred.
• Experience working with issue advocacy efforts across multiple states preferred.
• Fluency in English and Spanish preferred.
• Must be comfortable working in various remote environments as travel necessitates.

Salary commensurate with experience. Compensation package includes competitive benefits (healthcare, dental, vision, long/short term disability, life insurance, and 401K). This temporary full-time, salaried exempt position is expected to end December 31, 2022, unless funding is secured to continue the role.  This role will require a flexible schedule including evening and weekend work time, as well as regular travel across California and Nevada. This will also include participation in Equality California’s schedule of events, including Pride festivals, advocacy events, and more. Applicants will be reimbursed for mileage and must have a reliable vehicle and be able to drive in California.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all Equality California and Equality California Institute staff are working remotely. In compliance with the state and local guidance, all Equality California and Equality California Institute staff located in the greater Los Angeles County area are expecting to return to the office in early 2022, pending changes in key COVID-19 restrictions. At that time, the Director of National Campaigns may be required to work from the Equality California office located in either San Francisco or Los Angeles.
