Range: $80,460.90 – $96,278 commensurate with experience.

Position Overview:

This position will work hand-in-hand with another Associate Program Director to fully support in the mentorship and professional development of program department staff, maintain and expand Equality California Institute’s relationship with community partners and organizations, and directly manage the implementation of Equality California Institute’s pipeline of leadership development programs, public advocacy programming, and special projects as needed.

The Associate Program Director will assist with other current Equality California programs and issues, including community engagement events (LGBTQ+ Prides), transgender rights, safe and supportive school climates, immigration, pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP medication), passing pro-equality legislation and electing supportive candidates to office. Equality California’s expanded mission includes an intersectional approach to issues, as well as working with a wide range of institutions such as schools, businesses, unions, religious congregations, local governments, health clinics, and LGBTQ+ centers.

Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Support the Program Director in the implementation and oversight of daily activities of the program department. This includes problem-solving, budget analysis, technical assistance, and capacity expansion for program staff as needed.
  • Manage grant reporting and program evaluation.
  • Implementing objectives from grant-funded programs throughout California and Nevada.
  • Implementing and developing strategies to achieve all grant deliverables
  • Supporting program staff in the implementation of grant-funded projects. Supporting oversight of budget and fiscal management for the department.
  • Maintain and expand Equality California Institute’s relationship with community partners and organizations. Develop key relationships with representatives of LGBTQ+ organizations, LGBTQ-friendly organizations, and allied organizations.
  • Directly manage the implementation of Equality California Institute’s suite of public education and advocacy programming and additional special projects as needed.
  • Support implementation of Equality California Institute’s pipeline of leadership development and community power building program, and additional special projects as needed.
  • This includes regular annual leadership development and network convenings, and annual community advocacy convenings.
  • This also includes providing administrative support, management, and oversight of periodic and issue- or time-specific advocacy and public education campaigns.
  • Represent Equality California at various state and local events, statewide.
  • Support the mentorship, professional development, and work guidance of the program department staff to ensure the successful operation as required by specific programs or projects. The Associate Program Director will delegate tasks and responsibilities and manage the support required by the department staff for assigned programs and projects.
  • Support Equality California’s advocacy, legislative, and electoral work.
  • Phone/text bank in support of Equality California endorsed candidates.
  • Canvassing and talking to voters will be required.
  • Volunteer recruitment to execute canvasses.
  • Providing program support across all Equality California’s programs and issue priorities. Support other work of the organization on an as-needed basis at the discretion of the Program Director, Managing Directors, and Executive Director:
    • The Associate Program Director is expected and required to work across all programs. Areas of focus will shift depending on the staffing needs of the organization and of various programs over time.
  • All program staff are expected and required to work at Pride festivals and other community events requiring an Equality California presence.
  • The Associate Program Director might be assigned and tasked with short and long-term additional programs
  • The Associate Program Director might be assigned a completely different program based on the needs of the organization

The above is not an exhaustive list of duties and you will be expected to perform different tasks as necessitated by your role within the organization and the overall operational needs of the organization.

Qualifications: 

A bachelor’s or master’s degree is a plus.

  • Three to five years of experience managing teams (i.e., volunteers, staff, interns, )
  • Seven years of work experience, ideally with youth-facing work (i.e., youth advocacy or youth-centered support), the K-12 school system, gender, and sexual education, and/or transgender and intersex
  • A strong understanding of the issues LGBTQ+ people face, and a commitment to equality and
  • Professional or lived experience with the TGI community and working on transgender, gender-expansive, and intersex issues.
  • Strong fiscal management skills (e.g., experience managing multiple state and private funding budgets and grant deliverables), writing skills, and attention to detail.
  • Experience community organizing, canvassing, doing GOTV work, and/or working at high- traffic community events (i.e., Prides).
  • Proven success communicating effectively to the public about advocacy or educational goals; experience professionally representing organizations at different types of events – political events, professional events, community events, and the ability to speak on behalf of an organization in a succinct and coherent
  • Highest level of professionalism when working with both internal and external stakeholders
  • Knowledge, passion, and commitment to addressing issues impacting the LGBTQ+ community as well as advancing equity and social justice generally.
  • A positive attitude and willingness to work collaboratively and in support of Equality California’s
  • An understanding of and strong commitment to the mission of the organization and proven ability to work effectively across cultures, positions, and industries with the highest degree of professionalism and grace.
  • Reliable transportation with the ability to travel frequently to major markets throughout California and Nevada is required. This position will be expected to travel for various events for the department and
  • Capacity to work outside normal business hours to meet the needs of the department and organization.

This position will require a flexible schedule including evening and weekend work time, as well as regular travel across California and Nevada. Employees will be reimbursed for mileage and must have a reliable vehicle with a valid driver’s license and car insurance. This position will also include participation in Equality California’s schedule of events, including Pride festivals, advocacy events, and more.

Compensation and Benefits:

In addition to free medical plans and PPO options, we offer:

  • 4% annual wage increase effective January 1st of each year per the collective bargaining

  • 2 paid floating holidays to be used for religious/ cultural holidays/events of your
  • 3 weeks of accrued paid

  • 8 hours for civic engagement of your choice outside of EQCA
  • Paid Winter break – the last week of the year is a paid week off

  • $1500 bonus for every 2 years of
  • $1200 per year for professional development or education
  • Comp days.
